Our TJX partnership with Marshals is one of many Work-Based Learning Opportunities available for High School Students with intellectual disabilities. Work-based learning begins in the month of October and ends in the month of June. Students work 10 hours a week alongside store employees and are paid a monthly minimum wage. Classroom teachers serve as Work-Based Liaisons and communicate with store managers to ensure students are training in a professional manner. Skills acquired during the yearlong work-based learning opportunities include but are not limited to:

  • The reinforcement of basic mathematical knowledge and financial literacy skills

  • Effective communication skills are reinforced when students interact with customers, managers and employees

  • Time management, sorting, and the maintenance of lunch schedules provides opportunities for students to understand quantifiable concepts

  • Executing pedestrian safety while navigating to and from job site locations
